THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS ŽELEZNIK

THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS ZELEZNIK

The origin of the medieval fortress Železnik is dated to the same period as the nearby Kurvingrad, to the second half of the 14th century, during the reign of the Duke Lazar, for the purpose of defense against the threat of the oncoming Turkish power. An anonymous Serbian landowner built up the fortification of which only the traces of the western rampart wall and the three-meter high residues of what used to be a multistory tower remained to be seen. From the walls, built in rubble and roughly dressed stone bound by the coarse lime mortar, still visible wooden beams are defiantly protruding into the open, trying to link the past and the present times. Later national rebellions against Turkish conquerors in 1835 and 1841 left traces of destruction on the fortress of Železnik.
