THE EARLY-BYZANTINE CITADEL GRADIŠTE

GRADISTE CITADEL, THE CHURCH APSIDAL PART

GRADIŠTE CITADEL, THE CHURCH APSIDAL PART

It is a part of the defense system of the Emperor Justinian I (527-565). Inside the well-fortified ramparts, there was a church with a sanctuary partition made of marble slabs, an interior sloping apsis with the seats for bishops, and the walls with fresco decoration. The only remnants of this church within the determined ramparts are now the fundaments of the apsidal part, pieces of parapet slabs and fragments of fresco mortar with the traces of color.
