NIŠ IN 448

The Byzantine mission, sent by the Emperor Theodosius to Attila in 448, was also accompanied by Priscus. Coming to Niš, he noted: "When we arrived to Niš (eV Naisson), we found the town totally deserted, as it had been torn down to the ground by the enemy (the Huns in 441). There were some people on the ruins of the temples, having been lingering there due to illnesses. We spent the night in the open, on a glade away from the river, as its banks were covered with the remains of those killed in the battle". At that time, Niš represented the border between the Huns and Byzantium.
