GEORGIJE POPOVIĆ

Metropolitan of Niš and Bela Crkva, 1735-1754

Born 1701 in Stari Vlah, died December 1st 1754, and buried in the Cathedral of Timisoara. The Patriarch Arsenije IV ordained him the metropolitan of Niš on August 3rd, 1735. When he came to the head of Niš Eparchy, he took on himself the debts of his predecessor Joanićije, and he subsequently got into more debts, so he was sued to the Court Office in Vienna. This might have been the reason why the Court Office did not give Popović the eparchy in spite of his great merits in the war against the Turks. Having escaped to Austria together with Arsenije IV, he tried to prove that the debt was not his own but of the Eparchy of Niš. In 1745 he succeeded to become the bishop of Timisoara. He built the bishop's residence in Timisoara, the Cathedral of Ascension, then, the triptych for the Studenica Monastery in 1750, and in 1751 he had the sanctuary of the Krušedol Monastery frescoed.
