BISHOP NICETAS

(St. Nicetas of Remesiana)

He was born ca 338 in Remesiana (present-day Bela Palanka). As a priest, he attended the Council of Rome in 369, where the problem of Arianism was discussed. Around 370-371, he became the bishop of Remesiana. He wrote his first dissertation, titled De Fide, in the period of 370-375 (the work was about the heresy of Bonosus). Being a great fighter against heresy and an advocate of Orthodox religion, he took part in the Council of Antioch in 378. During the reign of Theodosius I, in 379, Orthodox religion won in Illyricum ("Nicene Creed"), but the fight against Arianism continued. He participated in the Council of Capua in 391, with the task to investigate the heresy of metropolitan Bonosus. He was also present in the Council of Nimes in 394. In the period of 400-405, he created the Divine Hymn Te Deum, sung throughout the Christianity even today. He is also mentioned by the Pope Innocent I in his letters, dated 409 and 414, addressed to the bishop of Niš Marcianus. St. Nicetas died in his 82, on June 22nd, 420, in his hometown Remesiana.
